Shopping
online offers lots of benefits that you won't find shopping in a store or by
mail. For example, the Internet is always open - seven days a week, 24 hours a
day. And, bargains can be numerous online. Shopping on the Internet is
just as safe as shopping in a store or by mail.
Why shop on the internet?
Well, it's easy, it's convenient, and you
can do it any hour of the night or day. You can even shop in your pajamas!
You have many more choices of products and stores than your local area in
the physical world could ever provide. Using the web allows you to
comparison shop at a level far beyond what's previously been available. And
there are often great bargains to be found online that simply don't exist in
the physical world.
What are the goals of online shopping?
It's to find what you want, quickly and
easily. It's to be able to compare prices, and judge the quality of the
merchants. It's an easy ordering procedure, quick delivery, and good
customer service. Many of these goals mirror those of shopping in the
physical world. The good news is that some of them are much more easily
achieved on the web.
What methods work well when shopping
online?
The basic idea
is to locate your item, verify that it's exactly what you want, compare
prices, check the merchant's reputation, and place your order. There are two
paths to follow here. One is when you know pretty much what you're looking
for. The other is when you know you want a camera, for example, but have no
idea what kind, what brand, what features, etc.
Tips and Tricks
Now that we've covered
the basics of online shopping, here are some things to pay attention to for
a better experience. When searching for something, check your spelling.
Despite looking intelligent, shopping search engines are quite stupid and
don't understand how you meant to spell something. Be aware that searches on
common words, like "music", "book", and even an author's
or artist's name may return many, many search results. If possible, search
using two or more keywords and put them "in quotes" if they are
likely to appear next to each other. Doing this will greatly reduce the list
of results you'll need to sift through. But if you find you're not getting
any results, or the only results you get are *not* for the item you're
looking for, try removing the quotes and/or using different keywords.
When you find
your item at an online merchant, be sure to look at whatever detailed
information is provided. Make sure it's exactly the item you want, and not a
similar item with fewer (or more) features than you're interested in. For
things like books and CDs, it's pretty simple to know if the item is a
match. But with consumer electronics and computer related equipment, for
example, some items in a manufacturer's product line may look exactly the
same, but may actually be different models with different features and
different prices. I hate to use a cliche, but make sure you're comparing
apples to apples.
Also take the opportunity
to make sure the item is actually in stock. Sadly, even some large and
well-known online stores show items in stock until you actually try to order
them. The databases behind their sites are not updated as frequently as they
should be, so be prepared to use another merchant if your first choice is
out of stock. Check the merchant's promised delivery time and return policy.
And look into taxes and/or shipping charges that may be added to the price.
It's not uncommon for one merchant to offer something at a lower price than
another only to have the second merchant's total price, including shipping,
end up cheaper. Be sure to select the right shipping option for you. Some
sites play a little trick and set the default shipping method to a faster,
but more costly option.
Finally, make sure
to print any web pages showing your receipt and detailed item information.
When shopping online, that's the only proof you have regarding what you
purchased.
